Name of the course: GR1-01 Paper conservation 1 Learning outcomes: Basic knowledge of the theory and methods of paper conservation. Also the ability to carry out basic paper conservation treatments on documents and prints. Content: A theoretical and practical introduction to basic paper conservation and restoration disciplines such as cleaning, disinfection, pH measurements, deacidification, infilling and flattening. The course will include an introduction to the manufacture of ink. A selection of chemical and physical test methods will also be presented. Name of the course: GR1-03 Fibre identification Learning outcomes: Knowledge of microscopy as well as the ability to identify the paper fibres. Content: Introduction to the microscope and its maintenance and presentation of the structure and characteristics of paper fibres. Introduction to the refractive index and the selection of embedding media. Preparation of whole mounts for transmitted microscopy. Name of the course: GR1-04 Graphic printing techniques Learning outcomes: General and basic knowledge of different graphic printing techniques and their characteristics. Content: The course comprises the classic printing techniques within relief printing, intaglio printing, flat printing and screen-printing. In addition new printing techniques such as photopolymer gravure and ImagOn film and their combination with the classic techniques will be presented. Name of the course: GR2-05 Paper conservation 2 Learning outcomes: Knowledge of more advanced methods of paper conservation together with the ability to carry out more complex treatments on art on paper. Content: Continuation of Paper conservation 1 with emphasis on the conservation treatment of coloured prints and drawings and posters. In addition the course includes topics such as bleaching, lining and the use of adhesives. Name of the course: GR2-06 Pigments and dyes Learning outcomes: Fundamental knowledge of the classical pigments and dyes, their history, chemical structure and physical-chemical properties. Ability to perform a chemical analysis and to identify pigments. Content: Examination of a selection of classical pigments and dyes which have been used for cave paintings, wall paintings, frescoes and painting on wood, canvas and paper. Practical laboratory work with chemical analysis and identification of pigments.
